Gallery OCR Privacy Policy
Gallery OCR reads the text in your photos on your phone. It has no internet access. It does not collect, send or share any data.
What the app does
Gallery OCR is a photo gallery for Android. It reads the text in your photos with optical character recognition (OCR), so you can search photos by their text and copy text from them.
Data the app uses
- Photos on your phone. With your permission, the app reads the photos in your gallery to show them and to read their text.
- Images you share to the app. When you share an image from another app, Gallery OCR saves a copy in its private storage, so it can show and search the image later.
- Text found in your photos. The app stores this text, the position of each line, and album settings in a database in its private storage.
Where the data stays
- All processing happens on your phone. The OCR models are part of the app.
- The app does not have the Android internet permission. It cannot send data over the network.
- The app turns off Android backup and device-to-device transfer for its data. Your text does not go to a cloud backup.
- Other apps cannot read the app's private storage.
What the app does not do
- No accounts or sign-in.
- No analytics, crash reporting, advertising or tracking.
- No sale or sharing of data with third parties.
Permissions
- Photos and videos (READ_MEDIA_IMAGES): to show your photos and read their text. You can give access to some photos only.
- Notifications: to show the progress of a long reading run.
- Foreground service: to keep a long reading run going while the screen is off.
- Run at startup (RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED): to keep the schedule that reads new photos after a restart.
Clipboard
When you copy text, the app puts it on the Android clipboard. It marks the text as sensitive, so Android hides it in the clipboard preview. Other apps can read the clipboard as Android allows.
How to delete your data
- To delete one shared image and its text, open it in the app and tap Delete.
- To delete all data, clear the app storage in Android settings, or uninstall the app. Your original photos stay in your gallery.
Children
The app collects no personal data from anyone, including children.
